building < against refers to the non-conformist production of space, resistant buildings, protest architectures, autonomous and functionally open architectures, the preservation and cultivation of places, radical reconstructions. And even more radical practices of not building at all.

The world is irreparably damaged. We need to put an end to reckless construction activities and current economic practices based on violence and exploitation. Instead, we must work towards an emancipated view of labour, equality for the environment and consequently new, more caring forms of living together. In a balancing act between wage labour, childcare, friendships, political activism, and artisticpractice, we spent a year discussing these challenges and exploring the possibilities of an exhibition.

The main element of the exhibition is a modular shelf made of scrap metal resting on pointed feet. Found and self-made, old and historical, new, useless, and even fantastic (building) materials are stored and made available here – it is a hub for experiments and research, where works are displayed, can dock on, or be further developed.

The projects featured in the exhibition illustrate the diverse ways in which fabrics and materials can be reinterpreted in their contents or functions and physically processed: From experimental approaches to designing and building with raw wool or reflections on the production, materiality, and history of bricks to research exploring the past and present of protest cultures, uprisings, occupations and counter-movements.

A wharf serves as a setting for learning, workshops, and discussions. It is a place to read, rest, and plan. Together with visitors, we will build a resistant structure to be inserted into the public domain in a protest against real estate speculation, profit maximization, and the destruction of the planet, while celebrating collective luxuries and democracy.

Revoltierende Stoffe, wiederständiges Bauen, zukünftige Welten

building < against meint nicht-konformes Herstellen von Räumen, widerständiges Bauen, Protest-Architekturen, nutzungsoffene und autonome Strukturen, das Erhalten von Räumen und Orten, unbedingtes Mitdenken von Sorgearbeit, radikales Umbauen. Und noch radikaleres Nicht-Bauen.

Die Welt ist irreparabel beschädigt. Es braucht einen Baustopp, ein Ende der auf Gewalt und Ausbeutung basierenden Wirtschaftsweisen; eine emanzipierte Sicht auf Arbeit, die Gleichberechtigung der Umwelt und folglich andere, fürsorgendere Formen des Zusammenlebens. Im Durcheinander von Lohnarbeit, Kinderbetreuung, Freund:innenschaften, politischem Aktivismus und Kunstpraxis haben wir ein Jahr lang diese Herausforderungen diskutiert und über eine Ausstellung nachgedacht.

Ein modulares Regal aus Altmetall mit spitzen Füßen ist zentrales Element der Ausstellung. Dort werden gefundene und selbst hergestellte, alte, neue, unnütze bis fantastische (Bau)Stoffe gelagert und Experimente, Recherchen und künstlerische Arbeiten gezeigt.

Die Arbeiten in der Ausstellung zeigen die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten, Stoffe und Materialien inhaltlich zu interpretieren und physisch zu bearbeiten: von experimentellen Versuchen, mit Rohwolle zu bauen, über Reflexionen zur Herstellung, Materialität und Geschichte von Ziegeln bis hin zu Recherchen, die sich mit Vergangenheit und Gegenwart von Protesten, Aufständen, Besetzungen und Gegenbewegungen auseinandersetzen.

Die Werft ist Lernort und Werkstätte. Dort finden Workshops und Diskussionen statt. Es ist ein Ort zum Lesen, Rasten und Planen. Zusammen mit den Besucher:innen wird ein revoltierendes Gebilde gebaut, das im Protest gegen Immobilienspekulation, Profitmaximierung und die Zerstörung des Planeten und zur Feier von gemeinschaftlichem Luxus und Demokratie in die Öffentlichkeit getragen wird.
